“However, the Argentinian defender is expected to make a full recovery in time to be ready for the start of next season.”

Joining from Ajax last summer for a fee north of £57m, the Argentina international suffered a fracture foot in the Red Devils 2-2 draw on Thursday night against Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League.

United squandered a 2-0 lead in Thursday’s quarter final that saw them lose two defenders to injury.

Martinez was carried off in the 86th minute after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his foot, leaving his side reduced to 10 ten when they were still desperately trying to hold onto a 2-1 lead.

Meanwhile, his defensive partner and French star Raphael Varane had been forced off during the half time recess after sustaining an injury and will be expected to be on the sidelines for a couple of weeks.

“Everyone at Manchester United sends Lisandro and Rapha our best wishes for a speedy recovery,” the club noted.

Varane was replaced by team skipper Harry Maguire, who, in stoppage time deflected the back into the back of his own net as the visitors restored parity.

The two defenders join striker Marcus Rashford on the sidelines after the striker suffered a groin injury during their 2-0 victory Everton on Saturday in the Premier League.
