Erik ten Hag wins his first trophy as Manchester United boss

Erik ten Hag has won his first trophy as Manchester United boss after the Red Devils beat Eddie Howe Newcastle by 2-0 at Wembley Stadium in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.

The 53-year-old Dutch international took over the reins at Old Trafford last summer (2022) from Ajax.

Against the run of play, central midfielder Casemiro broke the deadlock with a header in the 33rd minute off Luke Shaw’s brilliant delivery.

Six minutes later, the Man United doubled their advantage when an on-form Marcus Rashford’s shot was deflected by Sven Botman to beat Loris Karius in the Magipies’ goal. The goal was awarded as an own goal.

In the second half, United were once again forced to rely on counter attacks that didn’t yield much with Rashford and Bruno Fernandez forcing Karius into some brilliant saves as Newcastle continue to dominate their affairs.

Despite their dominance, Eddie Howe’s side lack creativity to break the Red Devils’ solid defence.

It’s been an outstanding week for United who beat Leicester City last weekend by 3-0 before knocking out Barcelona from the UEFA Europa League at the round of 32 when they edged them by 2-1 at Old Trafford and 4-3 on aggregate after two legs.

Speaking to Sky Sports about winning the trophy, Rashford said: “It’s a mixture of all emotions but it is massive for us and something we have missed as a club. It pushes us hard to keep going.

“The hunger is to have more moments like this, when you win finals it is massive for the club and us as individuals and we want to keep pushing for that. I am buzzing with the result, everyone put a lot of work in to get here and it is a massive feeling.”

“The manager wants us to play attacking football and that means mixing positions. It is natural for our forward players,” he added.

Ten Hag’s side are chasing a quadruple this season as they continue to compete for the Premier League where they are third on the table, still in the FA Cup and in the Europa League where they will be meeting Real Sociedad at the next stage.

United return to action on Wednesday 1st March when they host their former manager David Moyes with his West Ham United in the 5th round of the Emirates FA Cup.
